Huma Bhabha’s Eerie Inventiveness at David Zwirner

Huma Bhabha is best known for her humanoid sculptures, simultaneously terrifying and intriguing, totemic creations that look like what would have happened had Willem de Kooning served as the costume designer for “Predator” or an ancient Aztec artist had somehow popped into a screening of “Alien.” And while the Pakistani-American Bhabha embraces these connections—never one to shy away from the gruesome, her influences take in J.G. Ballard, David Cronenberg and others—there’s much more to her work than the grotesque.
