The best exhibitions in Paris in January 2024

 Do you have to be dead (dramatically) to be successful? Seeing the record attendance for the vast Nicolas de Staël retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, one might think so. On the upper floor of the institution, a stunning exhibition, rich in discoveries and surprises, displays relative calm. However, this is the first retrospective of the American artist Dana Schutz, born in Michigan in 1976, living in New York, represented since 2020 by the powerful David Zwirner gallery. Lively, sarcastic, grimacing, his style is revealed in a chronological journey, from the 2000s to today. His complex compositions and his love of daring colors testify to his virtuosity. War, vanity or inner conflicts inhabit each of his powerful paintings and sculptures. A delight.
