Andra Ursuța Conjures a Liturgy of Decay

Andra Ursuţa has always embraced an unapologetically morbid aesthetic that fuses brutality, vulnerability, decay and dark irony. Her macabre sculptures evoke the darkest facets of religious iconography – martyrdom, ecstatic suffering, tortured flesh – placing them within the vanitas tradition. These elements reappear in her exhibition ‘Apocalypse Now and Then’ at the Deste Foundation, although here they are amplified by the history of the building itself.  Read more
