As his London show opens, Louis Fratino speaks about memory, artistic inheritance, and the elusive alchemy of making a good painting.
“I paint from memory,” Fratino told Frieze editor-in-chief Andrew Durbin. “My varied references are usually most noticeable at an early stage of the work, and then they fall away through the filter of memory. My first paintings were of my siblings, my childhood home or my parents. I still paint them, but my world has expanded as I’ve grown older and travelled. I remain captivated, though, by my immediate surroundings. This is true for many of the artists whom I love and look to.”
