Once upon a time, a little girl growing up in Manchester, England, fell in love with dance. It was a hard fall. She watched Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers movies on TV and longed for a pair of ballet shoes. Her grandmother had no idea what ballet shoes were but sent away for a pair. When they arrived in the mail, they were red.
That girl was Sarah Michelson, who turns 62 this month. An influential, sometimes slippery and always uncompromising choreographer, her devotion to dance and to the dancers of New York City has grown more intense over time.
