“I’m not alone in questioning what could be necessary about making another painting, given the urgency of our moment. Studio work can be meandering, and turned-inward, and on an altogether different timeline than this unrelenting, bleak news cycle. With LGBTQ+ people and institutions which support them under renewed threat, the Ali Forney Center, with its robust, holistic approach and long history of service to a vulnerable community, is an ongoing success story. A beautiful example of what will grow from tragedy if it is met not with despair and resignation but with hope and love. If my studio work can in some small way help to fortify such an organization, the necessity of that effort couldn’t be made any more clear.” —Peter Shear
