On April 26, German artist Wolfgang Tillmans released his second music album, "Building from Here". In his solo exhibition "Essence Matters" in Hong Kong in March this year, viewers also first felt the music in the album in a video work of the same name. It is undeniable that in the past 35 years of practice, Tillmans has continuously reshaped our understanding of photography and the territory of photography in contemporary art. His works have a natural and unadorned intimacy and interesting and playful expressiveness , which are integrated with the questioning of established values and social order.
Following his large solo exhibition “Fragile” (2018-2022) touring eight cities in Africa and his retrospective exhibition “Looking Fearlessly” (2022-2024) touring three important institutions in North America, Tillmans returned to Hong Kong in March this year after a five-year absence. Before the construction of the exhibition “Essence Matters” began, he accepted an exclusive interview with Wallpaper* in his studio in Berlin.
